Beekeeping Practice, Opportunities, Marketing and Challenges in Ethiopia: Review-Juniper Publishers

JUNIPER PUBLISHERS - OPEN ACCESS JOURNAL OF DAIRY & VETERINARY SCIENCES Abstract This paper was aimed to compile the beekeeping practice, marketing system, existence of opportunities and constraints in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has huge apicultural resources that made it the leading honey and beeswax producer in Africa. The beekeeping practices available in Ethiopia are traditional forest, traditional backyard, transitional and improved beekeeping. Ethiopia has been revealed that the opportunities for beekeeping are the availability of natural forest with adequate apiculture flora and water resource, existence of a number of bee colonies, availability of farmers having indigenous knowledge and socio-economic value of honey and demand for honeybee products. In Ethiopian, only about 10% of the honey produced in the country is consumed by the beekeeping households.
