Study on Proteolytic Potential of Buffalo Milk Using Lactococcus Lactis Ssp. Cremoris and Lactococcus Lactis Ssp. Lactis-Juniper Publishers

Image
Journal of Dairy & Veterinary Sciences - Juniper Publishers     Introduction Buffalo milk contains all the nutrients in higher proportions than cow milk as per the nutrient components. The compositional differences between buffalo and cow milk are reflected on their physico-chemical properties. Milk from buffalo preferred for preparing dairy products of western and traditional (indigenous) type and nutritionally superior. Buffalo milk contains less cholesterol (total cholesterol 275 mg and free cholesterol 212mg per 100g of fat) in compared to cow milk (total cholesterol 330 mg and free cholesterol 280mg per 100g of fat) and more tocopherol (334.21|ig per kg for buffalo and 312.3|ig per kg of cow milk). Due to high peroxidase activity, buffalo milk can be preserved naturally for a longer period. Buffalo milk contains more calcium, better calcium: phosphorous ratio and less sodium and potassium than cow milk which makes it ...

Determining the Cost-Effectiveness of Treating Dairy Cows with Subclinical Ketosis during the First Week of Lactation-Juniper Publishers

Image
Journal of Dairy & Veterinary Sciences - Juniper Publishers   Introduction Ketosis is a major metabolic disorder of dairy cattle in the United States, affecting an estimated 40% of all lactations in the industry, between clinical and subclinical cases [ 1 ]. Clinical ketosis is characterized by high levels of ketones in the blood and is manifested by lethargy and anorexia in the peri-partum dairy cow [ 2 ]. Subclinical ketosis (SCK) requires a blood, milk, or urine test to diagnose. Even though it is not outwardly noticeable, it is still estimated to cost the farmer $289/case due to both the direct and indirect costs, especially with the loss in milk yield [ 3 ]. It has been shown that ketosis and negative energy balance have negative consequences on reproduction and immune function [ 4 ]. Subclinical ketosis is often defined as blood BHB concentrations of >1.2mM/L and < 3.0 mM/L [ 1 ]. McArt et al. [ 5 ] showed that PPG h...

Effects of Trypanosomosis on Hemogram and Some Biochemical Parameters of Guinea Pigs Experimentally Infected with Trypanosome Brucei Brucei in Maiduguri, Nigeria- Juniper Publishers

Journal of Dairy & Veterinary Sciences - Juniper Publishers Abstract The study was designed to evaluate the effect of tryponosomosis on Hemogram and some biochemical parameters of guinea pigs. Guinea pigs of both sexes weighing (5-10kg) were divided into six groups (A, B, C, D, E and F) with five guinea pigs in each group. At day zero, to establish the baseline data, all the animals in each of the six groups were bled for haematology and serum biochemistry and clinical parameters (rectal temperature, respiratory rate, pulse rate and heart beats) were recorded while general body condition and physical signs were also evaluated. Groups A, B and C were intraperitoneally (IP) inoculated with 1×106 dose of Trypanosoma brucei brucei contained in 0.5 ml of blood. Thereafter, blood samples were collected every other four (4) days for evaluation of haematology and serum electrolytes through the experimental period. Group D, E and F was uninfected control. All the infect...
