Dairy Cow Welfare, Heat Stress and Climate Change- Juniper Publishers

Image
Journal of Dairy & Veterinary Sciences - Juniper Publishers Abstract There has been widespread concern in the media regarding the impact that livestock have on global warming, particularly with methane from ruminants noted as a potent greenhouse gas. Less public debate has occurred however, on the potentially negative impact that global warming will have, indeed is having, on livestock welfare. Here we will first briefly discuss the effect of livestock husbandry on climate change before moving to a more detailed discussion of the effect that a warmer climate is likely to have, again is currently having, on the physiology and welfare of cattle across the world. Finally, we will briefly discuss measures that can be taken to reduce the impact of temperature increase on dairy cattle. Introduction Recent research has estimated that while cattle provide just 18% of the world’s dietary calories and 37% of protein, they use a huge pr...

Analytical Study of Pancreatitis in Dogs- Juniper Publishers

Journal of Dairy & Veterinary Sciences - Juniper Publishers Abstract A number of theoretical and practical questions about canine pancreatitis persuading that anatomical and morphological changes, also biochemical, are the only diagnostic mode for this disease that affects the pancreas, major roles in the digestion and secretion of endocrine hormones . Analysis of literature data on biochemical parameters during pancreas functions exam; a diagnosis performed on serum enzyme correlations changes during pancreatitis treatment in experimental animals determined by statistical analysis of biochemical parameters of canine pancreatitis. The demonstration of typical clinical signs of this disease adjusted by the typical methods of diagnosis, will develop the topical treatment can be established and treatments. Determination of Phospholipids in Milk by HPLC with Evaporative Light Scattering Detector: Optimization and Validation - Juniper Publishers

Image
Determination of Phospholipids in Milk by HPLC with Evaporative Light Scattering Detector: Optimization and Validation Authored by Rodríguez-Otero JL Phospholipids are part of the milk fat globule membrane. Functional and technological properties make them interesting for the development of functional foods or as ingredients of technological interest. In this study an analytical procedure for determination of major phospholipids in milk (phosphatidyl Ethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidyl Choline, phosphatidyl Serine and sphingomyelin) by HPLC with evaporative light scattering detector was optimized and validated. The best calibrations were achieved when an exponential model was applied; the squared correlation coefficients show a satisfactory linearity ranging from 0.975 to 0.993. The limit of detection for the different phospholipids ranged from 0.17μg for phosphatidyl Serine to 0.61μg for phosphatidyl Ethanolamine; and the limit of quantification...

The Importance of Corynebacterium Bovis Causing Mastitis - Juniper Publishers

Image
The Importance of Corynebacterium Bovis Causing Mastitis| Juniper Publishers Authored by Helio Langoni Bovine mastitis is the most frequent disease in dairy farms and cause several economic losses. Coryne bacterium bovis is a common agent of intra-mammary infections. This pathogen presents less importance for many researchers but there are many reasons to evaluate its participation as an important etiological pathogen of mastitis, such as the occurrence of this microorganism in the etiology of the bovine mastitis, effects on milk production and in somatic cell count (SCC). Towards a Sustainable Reproductive Sheep Management: Use of Photoperiod-Treated Rams to Increase Lamb Production in an Organic Farm - Juniper Publishers

Image
Towards a Sustainable Reproductive Sheep Management: Use of Photoperiod-Treated Rams to Increase Lamb Production in an Organic Farm Authored by José-Alfonso Abecia The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of the exposure of 45 days of long days without exogenous melatonin, on the results of a ram effect in June in a Churra sheep organic farm. Eight rams were divided into two groups, so that half of them exposed to 45 days of long days (16 h of light/day) from 15 Apr to 31 May (Artificial photoperiod, AP rams), and the remaining rams were under the natural photoperiodic conditions (NP rams). On 15 June, rams were introduced in two groups of ewes, which had previously been isolated from rams: AP-group (n=72), mated with AP rams, and NP-group (n=72), mated with NP rams. Proportion of ewes pregnant (fertility) was significantly higher in the AP-group of ewes (68%), compared with the NP-group (42%) (P<0.001). No differences between groups were observe...

Spread of Infectious Diseases and Socio-Cultural Factors in Developing Countries - Juniper Publishers

Image
Spread of Infectious Diseases and Socio-Cultural Factors in Developing Countries Authored by Hiroichi Kono This article aims to discuss the social factors associated with brucellosis and African swine fever (ASF) in Sri Lanka and Madagascar, respectively. In 2016, cross-sectional surveys were conducted in both countries. On the basis of the results of these surveys, we describe how brucellosis is more prevalent in certain ethnicities than others in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, in Madagascar, fihavanana, a social norm, encourages farmers to buy ASF-contaminated meat, resulting in ASF spread during outbreaks. It can be concluded that farmers’ socio-cultural behavior is one of the main reasons for the spread of animal diseases, and this should be taken into consideration when formulating disease control strategies. Laser Micro Dissection Systems: An Alternative Method of Defined Cell Isolation for Molecular Profiling - Juniper Publishers

Image
Laser Micro Dissection Systems: An Alternative Method of Defined Cell Isolation for Molecular Profiling   Authored by Ratan K Choudhary Laser micro-dissection permits isolation groups of cells from heterogeneous tissue sections under direct microscopic visualization. This technology not only allows isolation of homogenous subpopulation of cells but also allows immunophenotypically similar cells for RNA/DNA or protein extraction for downstream applications like western blot, mass spectrophotometry, real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, microarray and RNA sequencing. Isolation of dead cells unsuitable for functional assays, high cost of equipment and technical expertise required for operation are few limitations to laser microdissection systems. To Read more.. Influence of Using a Blend of Rennet Casein and Whey Protein Concentrate as Protein Source on the Quality of Mozzarella Cheese Analogue - Juniper Publishers

Image
Influence of Using a Blend of Rennet Casein and Whey Protein Concentrate as Protein Source on the Quality of Mozzarella Cheese Analogue Authored by Jana AH Cheese is deficient in whey proteins and whey protein has high nutritional significance in human diet. Hence it was decided to incorporate whey protein concentrate (WPC) in the formulation of Mozzarella cheese analogue (MCA), based on rennet casein (RC) and study its effect on the quality of resultant cheese analogue. The proportion of RC: WPC employed were 95:5, 90:10 and 85:15 w/w. The formulation of MCA comprised of 23.5% of protein blend, 15% vegetable fat, 2.75 % blend of trisodium citrate and disodium hydrogen phosphate (2.5:1, w/w), 0.07 % calcium chloride, 0.6% citric acid, 1.1% NaCl, 1.5% cheese flavoring, and rest, water. Varying the proportion of RC and WPC had a significant influence on the composition, textural properties, baking qualities and sensory quality of MCA judged as pizza topping. MCA made ...
