Laser Micro Dissection Systems: An Alternative Method of Defined Cell Isolation for Molecular Profiling
Authored by Ratan K Choudhary
Laser micro-dissection permits isolation groups of cells from
heterogeneous tissue sections under direct microscopic visualization.
This technology not only allows isolation of homogenous subpopulation of
cells but also allows immunophenotypically similar cells for RNA/DNA or
protein extraction for downstream applications like western blot, mass
spectrophotometry, real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction,
microarray and RNA sequencing. Isolation of dead cells unsuitable for
functional assays, high cost of equipment and technical expertise
required for operation are few limitations to laser microdissection
systems.
